An air-operated grinder is a practical tool powered by pressurized air. The flow of compressed air that enters the tool through an air inlet in its handle is converted into mechanical energy that rotates the abrasive wheel or a cutting disk of the grinder. Air grinders are indispensable for household, commercial, and industrial use, being ideal for polishing, buffing, cutting, contouring, and sharpening. Most often used for metal working, air grinders will be equally handy for working with wood, stone, and plastic. Air grinders are available in various sizes ranging from compact hand-held to large bench top models.
The most popular air grinder type is a die grinder, either straight or angled. Die grinders use abrasive attachments connected to the tool's body with a collet, which is a type of chuck that provides concentricity necessary for effective tool operation and swift change of grinding/cutting attachments. A variety of cutters used for air grinders is immense, ranging from mounted stones for grinding, drill bits and endmills for machining, mounted laps for lapping, cloth and fiber drums for polishing and buffing, sanding drums and flap wheels for sanding, etc. A grinder attachment should be chosen in accordance with the application purpose.
Angle grinders are also referred to as disk grinders as they use the abrasive or cutting disk. They usually feature an adjustable disk guard and an ergonomic side-handle for convenient operation. This versatile air-powered tool can be outfitted with a range of different disks to make it well-suited for a whole number of applications. Cutting disks can cut through tile, stone, and concrete, sanding pads can tackle rough and fine sanding jobs, grinding disks are ideal for wearing away thick layers of material, wire brushes will easily remove rust from metal surfaces, while buffing disks will give the surface a smooth shiny finish.
