Power drills are among the most commonly used and versatile tools available on the market. Air drills are used for a wide variety of household, workshop, and construction site tasks. From basic jobs like hanging a large picture frame to complex woodworking and furniture assembly jobs, a powerful and lightweight air-operated drill is the kind of tool you require to make holes in plastic, wood, or metal, drive in fasteners, and tackle almost any tricky task.
Unlike electric drills powered by A/C source, pneumatic drills do not require electricity and are commonly used at large construction sites. Air-operated drills take their power from an air compressor and convert the energy of pressurized air to create rotational force. The parts of all power drills are roughly the same. A typical air drill is a gun-shaped tool that consists of a handle with an air tube inlet, a power trigger, a chuck to hold the drill or screwdriver bit and the drill/screwdriver bit itself. Commonly the air drills are offered with either geared or keyed chucks available in 1/2", 1/4", 3/8" and 5/16" chuck sizes.
Air drills are available with variable speed switches to let you easily adjust to your specific drilling or driving needs. Usually offered with up to four speed setting, air drills can operate at speeds normally ranging from 200 to more than 2000 RPM. A reversing switch allows the user to easily change the direction of the drill bit rotation. Additional clutch is designed to regulate the torque. Some models feature adjustable torque clutches with as much as 24 settings for maximum accuracy and control. Drill bits may be offered in a range of sizes and shapes, though twist drill bits are the most common for drilling metal, wood, and plastic.
To make the most out of your air-powered drill, choose the type of the tool suited for the kind of drilling job you have in mind. Air angle drills will be indispensable for service works that require the use of compact lightweight tools. Angle drills feature an extended handle with an angle head for access to tight spots. Mini drills are well-suited for standard duty jobs. They minimize the user’s wrist strain thanks to their light weight and low vibration level. Despite their compact size, mini air drills deliver smooth and agile performance. Spot drills are designed for removing spotwelds by applying high torque at low speed.
