Dirty oil can cause catastrophic damage to your engine. By using the proper lube filter for your engine, you can minimize the possibility of costly downtime and repairs. Baldwin Filters has been making lube filters for over eighty years. With more than 650 lube filters for heavy-duty and automotive applications, Baldwin has the coverage and quality you demand. Improved high-performance engines and new emission standards have had a significant impact on the development of oils and oil filters. As manufacturers continue to develop more sophisticated engines, new classifications of oils will continue to be developed. These new oils play a vital part in protecting engines by reducing friction and wear, cooling engine parts, sealing combustion chambers, cleaning engine components and inhibiting corrosion. Lube filters also play a critical role in protecting engines by removing damaging contaminants from the oil.
As part of one of the world’s largest filter manufacturing companies, Baldwin’s research, development and production capabilities are unsurpassed in the industry. The BD50000 is the first lube filter to take advantage of Highly Engineered Layered Media (HELM™), developed at our Innovation Center. This next generation of highly engineered media, coupled with precise design, makes the innovative BD50000 the most effective filter, delivering maximum efficiency and durable performance.
Baldwin Filters’ High Velocity Dual-Flow lube filters provide improved engine protection during extended oil drain intervals, high idle time and harsh operating conditions. The patented design of the High Velocity Dual-Flow filters provides maximum filtration, while the heavy-duty construction ensures dependable operation. The High Velocity Dual-Flow spin-on design is superior to standard full-flow/by-pass designs in that a larger portion of the flow travels through the high efficiency element, removing more small contaminants. In traditional full-flow/by-pass designs, only a small percentage of flow, 10% or less, travels through the high efficiency element.
Baldwins unique integral series design of many lube filters provides maximum filtration while the heavy-duty construction ensures dependable operation. The patented series design and a cellulose/synthetic blend media are central to the filter’s increased contaminant holding capacity and longer element life. Baldwin’s integral series design places the by-pass element inside the full-flow element instead of stacking the two elements, as in standard parallel designs. This allows both elements to occupy almost the full length of the filter housing and provides additional filtration area. In the series design, all oil passes through the full-flow element instead of just part of it as with parallel designs. The full-flow/by-pass technology provides up to 43 percent more full-flow surface for greater contaminant holding capacity. Higher efficiency means less damage-causing contaminants pass through the filter to sensitive components, leading to longer and more efficient system life. Increased capacity extends filter life without decreasing filter efficiency.
Clean air is essential to the performance and life of your engine. Proper air filtration is important because a small amount of dirt can cause a tremendous amount of engine damage. Baldwin offers a wide range of air filters to provide the protection your engine needs. With over 2,200 air filters in our line, Baldwin filters supply the necessary protection for all types of engines. With innovative designs that include our Channel Flow, Extreme Performance, EnduraPanel and EnduraCube air filters, Baldwin is committed to providing the protection your vehicles and equipment require. For efficient combustion, a modern diesel engine requires several thousand times as much air as it does fuel. Under normal operating conditions, to burn one gallon (3.79 liters) of fuel you have to clean 15,000 gallons (56781 liters) of air. Add a turbocharger to that engine, and air consumption requirements increase by 20% or more. Proper air filtration is important because a small amount of dirt can cause a tremendous amount of engine damage. The purpose of the air filter is to promote long system life by keeping damaging contaminants away from sensitive engine components.
Baldwin’s EnduraPanel heavy-duty air filters represent a major advance in air filtration technology. EnduraPanel air filters combine high efficiency and capacity in an extremely rugged, compact design. These durable filters are built to go the distance, providing outstanding protection for hard-working equipment. The EnduraPanel line includes primary and secondary filters. The horizontally-pleated media in single and dual element designs provides the maximum amount of filter media with ample air flow.
Channel Flow EXO is the next generation of the popular Baldwin Channel Flow air filter line. Channel Flow EXO filters take the straight-through airflow path of Channel Flow and combine it with cutting edge, proprietary technology. The result is a new compact line of Channel Flow air filters that are more efficient and durable than the competition while meeting the space and configuration requirements of modern engines.
With the continued demand for higher performance engines, along with stricter emission regulations, leading construction and agricultural manufacturers are designing vehicles with more compact air intake systems. These innovative designs mean better performance, but have less installation space under the hood. Baldwin Filters’ Channel Flow® air filters provide superior filtration solutions in a lightweight, compact design for easy installation in less space. This straight-through air flow technology not only allows for less installation space, but also offers manufacturers flexibility in design configuration.
Ideally suited to demanding high dust environments, Baldwin’s Extreme Performance air filters offer fleet operators significant benefits over conventional cellulose-only media. Baldwin’s Extreme Performance air filters utilize nanofiber technology. Nanofiber, bonded to cellulose media, provides unequalled performance, particularly with submicron contaminants. While nanofiber cannot be seen with the naked eye, the Baldwin nanofiber base sheet is yellow to distinguish it from conventional media. All Baldwin Extreme Performance heavy-duty air filters are identified with an “XP” part number suffix.
Dirty fuel is a fact of life. Even with the development of cleaner-burning fuels, contaminants are still a major concern when it comes to fuel systems.
Baldwin Filters offers more than 650 different fuel filters, fuel managers, coalescers and fuel/water separators to protect your engine. Even with the development of cleaner-burning fuels, contaminants are still a major concern when it comes to fuel systems.
Baldwin fuel filters protect sensitive fuel system components, such as injection pumps and injectors, from damaging contaminants, which include:
Water — destroys lubricative properties of your fuel, damaging fuel system components and resulting in fuel flow stoppage at cold temperatures.
Fungus and Bacteria — plug fuel filters, feed on hydrocarbons and spread rapidly in the presence of moisture.
Precipitates (non-combustible materials) — settle out of the fuel causing few problems.
Particulates (black, tar-like contaminants) — plug fuel filters quickly.
Wax — adds energy to diesel fuel; however, during cold weather, wax thickens and gels – slowing or stopping fuel flow.
Stricter emission regulations have forced engine manufacturers to design cleaner, more efficient engines. These new engine systems require higher fuel pressures (up to 60,000 psi) and tighter tolerances. Microscopic particles in the fuel (as small as 2 to 3 microns) under high pressure, can cause abrasive wear, severely damaging fuel injection system components. With so much at risk, today’s equipment manufacturers require fuel entering the fuel injection system to be clean and free of contaminants, meeting strict ISO 4406 fuel cleanliness level of 12/9/6. Baldwin Filters’ BF46002, with Highly Engineered Layered Media (HELM™), helps prevent premature injector wear and costly downtime by keeping fuel pristine and high-precision fuel systems operating at maximum efficiency. The BF46002 is the first fuel filter to take advantage of the media technology developed at our Innovation Center. The BF46002, with highly engineered layered media, is designed to trap and hold more contaminants to protect high-pressure fuel systems.
Baldwin Filters’ fuel/water separator design incorporates a removable, all-metal, self-venting drain valve into the filter’s assembly for full compatibility with OE designs. Baldwin’s design removed the OE raised “keys” to allow universal fit on multiple OE fuel bases. This makes filter installation easier as no alignment to the mounting head is necessary. All primary filters are painted red, while all secondary filters are painted white. This color coding helps determine, at a glance, that the proper filter is being installed. The metal drain valve adds versatility of use on both standard and marine applications. Baldwin’s removable self-venting drain valve is standard on these filters; however, the filter can be used with the Baldwin drain or removed for use with the OE sensor or bowl.
In a modern fuel system, water can cause just as much damage as dirt. It leads to rust and corrosion which not only harms the tank, but also is passed along in the fuel stream in the form of hard particulate which causes engine wear. Combined with heat and pressure, water can damage parts through cavitation, erosion, etching and spalling. Baldwin fuel/water separators with open ports for reusable OE bowls can help prevent damage by efficiently removing water from fuel before it reaches your engine.
With the need for closer tolerances, faster cycle times, higher pressures and extended service intervals, more demand is being placed on the hydraulic filter. In addition to a full line of spin-on and cartridge hydraulic filters, Baldwin Filters also offers a line of hydraulic bases and indicators.
Proper filtration starts with selecting the right filter based on the original equipment manufacturer’s recommendations, which include:
Baldwin’s PureForce filters are engineered to withstand extreme conditions created by medium-pressure hydraulic systems, with working pressure up to 500 psi and flow rates up to 50 gpm. Highest Possible Structural Integrity Baldwin’s PureForce hydraulic filters feature a die cast aluminum baseplate locked in place by a patent pending L-Lock™ hem — eliminating leaks due to the integrity of the housing seal. Lab and field testing show that PureForce filters have the highest level of burst and fatigue characteristics — with PureForce exceeding the leading competitor’s published burst pressure specifications by an average of 65%. PureForce filters test at higher average levels on a more consistent basis — providing the most reliable medium-pressure hydraulic spin-on. This greatly reduces the possibility of unexpected downtime due to a failed filter.
To improve durability and enhance system performance, Baldwin designed a two-piece base featuring die cast aluminum construction with an integral threaded steel stud. The Baldwin design offers several advantages over competitive offerings. The threaded steel stud is stronger than aluminum studs used by the leading competitor. PureForce bases reduce the possibility of galling, which is caused by similar metals fusing together. The threaded steel stud allows for a 40% increase of the flow area over bases with aluminum studs that require heavier, thicker side walls. The increased flow area results in a lower pressure drop and extended service time. PureForce bases are available with or without 25 and 50 psi integral by-pass valves. PureForce bases have the unique capability to accommodate indicators on either side to facilitate mounting versatility.
Indicators are essential to maximizing the life of a replaceable hydraulic filter. Baldwin offers a visual indicator and three types of electrical indicators. The PureForce visual indicator is self-housed and features a pop-out button, which is triggered via magnetic force. Once triggered, the PureForce indicator stays activated even when the hydraulic system is shut down. Baldwin’s electrical indicators are available in three styles. The PureForce electrical indicators are self-housed units that do not rely on base geometry for proper activation. Single-Post Indicator is designed for mobile applications with DC voltage, the single-post indicator is compact in design and can be used when the filter base is grounded. The single-post design utilizes piston travel to ground the post to the switch housing. The 2-Wire Indicator is also intended for DC voltage applications, the 2-wire indicator can be used in applications where the housing is not grounded. The 2-wire indicator utilizes a magnet, which interacts with a reed switch through the walls of the indicator housing to provide clean on/off switching. The 3-Wire Indicator is for use in AC or DC voltage applications, the 3-wire electrical indicator is the ideal choice where 3-wire logic is being used. This versatile indicator is micro-switch activated.
Coolant filters protect your engine by trapping contaminants and distributing Supplemental Coolant Additives (SCAs) into your cooling system. Baldwin offers coolant filters with two SCA formulations to meet specific engine needs. Baldwin offers coolant filters with two SCA formulations to meet specific engine needs. Balanced Treatment for Ethylene Glycol (BTE™) is a direct replacement for DCA2 and is designed for systems operating with 30% to 60% ethylene/propylene glycol solutions.
Balanced Treatment Additive (BTA PLUS™) is a direct replacement for DCA4 and can be used in systems with antifreeze levels ranging from 0% to 60% ethylene/propylene glycol solutions. Coolant filters are available without SCAs if the use of liquid BTE or BTA PLUS additives is preferred. If your equipment does not currently have a coolant filter, Baldwin offers a remote-mount coolant filter base (CFB5000), which can be added to your system. Engine by-products, liner movement, and the wear and tear of starting and stopping the engine combine to deplete SCAs. Keeping SCAs at levels necessary for protection of the cooling system requires frequent testing and a careful maintenance schedule.
The Baldwin Filters Controlled Release Filters utilize a patented process that allows Supplement Coolant Additives to be released into your cooling system only when heat and coolant flow are present. Our field tests show that the additives are released at an even rate. This is important because competitors’ filters can “dump” all the additives at once, potentially overcharging the system, leading to additive drop out. The other extreme is not releasing enough additives towards the end of a maintenance period, thereby leaving the system vulnerable to cavitation erosion and corrosion. With the Baldwin Controlled Release products, all coolant is conditioned with coolant additives prior to being filtered. This ensures that no undissolved particles from the chemical mass can enter the system. It also ensures that the flow control orifice cannot be plugged. Baldwin’s media is a high-capacity synthetic media designed to trap contaminants and maintain its structure through long service intervals.
Baldwin Filters’ FleetStrip kit is a one-step way to test your cooling system. Equally important, it’s universal — making it easy to monitor any type of conventional coolant formulation. A heavy-duty diesel engine may run more hours in a year than a car engine will in its lifetime. This higher workload can cause additives in most commercial antifreezes to deplete at a much faster rate than they would in automotive use. This makes a periodic check of depletion rate and addition of supplemental additives vital to long engine life. Baldwin Filters FleetStrip can be used to test both ethylene and propylene glycol antifreezes. It allows quick, accurate testing without having to know what base additives are in the coolant. The test strip method eliminates inaccurate readings caused by using a hydrometer to test propylene glycol antifreeze.
Cabin air filters are becoming more common in automotive and heavy-duty on- and off-highway applications. These filters reduce the amount of airborne pollutants and particles entering the interior of a vehicle by capturing dust, pollen and other airborne contaminants. A Baldwin cabin air filter will protect passengers from airborne pollen, bacteria, dust and smog, reduce dust and dirt accumulation in the vehicle’s interior and increase air conditioning and heat output and performance. Baldwin cabin air filters are built to OE specifications to give you and your equipment the best protection available. Most cabin air filters are in a location that makes it moderately easy to access and replace. Cabin air filters are typically located under the hood, or behind or under the glove compartment. The cabin air filter should be changed every year or 12,000-15,000 miles.
A trucker’s job demands many hours behind a wheel, and for those long hauls, their truck is their home away from home. Because the majority of their time is spent inside the cab of a truck, it is important to provide a comfortable and safe environment. Contaminants and pollutants in outside air can create unhealthy and unsafe conditions for drivers when not filtered out before entering the cab area. Allergies alone affect as much as 30% of adult population, causing health issues and lost work days. Avoid downtime and health problems by choosing the right cab air filter for your truck. Baldwin heavy-duty cab air filters are designed to remove harmful contaminants and pollutants from the air before they enter the truck’s cab area. Replacing cab air filters during regularly scheduled maintenance will help ensure the air is clean to breathe.
Many existing fuel filters aren’t designed to remove significant amounts of water. They are designed to do their job in a single step. This means they must be porous enough to allow sufficient flow volume, which limits filtering ability. Any tighter media would result in frequent element changes. The DAHL system takes care of those shortcomings. DAHL’s functional dual-chamber 3-stage diesel fuel filter/water separators provide efficient suction side water separation and contaminant filtration. The key is the unique DAHL patented depressurizer cone, which spreads the flow of the fuel. With more area to flow over, greater separation of water and dirt from the fuel is achieved. DAHL fuel filter/water separators have less mechanical flow resistance than other separators, because the fuel changes direction only twice. The DAHL unit removes virtually 100% of the water and most of the contaminants from the fuel. The DAHL system eliminates water from fuel before reaching the fuel pump and injectors. This prevents the major cause of diesel fuel injection system failure. A DAHL fuel filter/water separator prolongs system life by eliminating pump and injector overhauls caused by water contaminated fuel. The cost of shop labor alone, just to repair the injection system on a 6-cylinder rig, exceeds the cost of the DAHL diesel fuel filter/water separator. The installation of a DAHL unit reduces the need to repair the fuel pump and/or injectors that could easily tie up equipment for one or two days. The loss of income in just a few hours of equipment downtime again would pay for a DAHL diesel fuel filter/water separator. Most of the solid contaminants are separated by the patented depressurizer cone in the bowl before reaching the filter element. Another factor resulting in less frequent changes is the extra paper in the filter element. Under normal conditions, the element can last up to 40,000 miles. With proven performance in the laboratory and in millions of miles/hours of commercial and industrial operation, you can be sure that each DAHL unit is designed right, built right and does its job right.
