It’s important to select the right type of body filler to repair dents and dings on a vehicle’s body. The quality of the filler you choose and the way it is applied directly influences the result of the repair or restoration job. Body fillers usually contain polyester resins mixed with cream hardener. Formulas differ, but all body fillers are used to even blemishes and dents. When you select the right body filler for your repair or restoration project, think of the final result. Standard body fillers work well on regular metal bodies yet will not adhere to galvanized steel. You will need medium-grade body filler to even out imperfections on fiberglass.
It is a must to prepare the body surface prior to applying a filler on it. First, you will need to remove rust, paint, and particles. Then you have to make sure the surface is perfectly clean, so wash it first to remove dust and then let it dry completely. Another thing to remember is sanding. Even premium-grade body fillers will not adhere to a smooth surface, so do not disregard sanding during body work. Some body fillers feature additional chemicals, a.k.a. bonders, which are applied to the body prior to filler application. This extra preparation step ensures better adhesion and more even application.
