Bolted joints can loosen due to different factors, but whatever the reason, loosening may lead to dangerous accidents. In order to prevent them, lock washers are utilized. They can be basically divided into three categories: spring action (or wave), toothed, and split-lock washers. The parts of the first category get compressed as the fastener is being tightened, and the resulting back tension counters loosening. The work of the second category is based on a ratchet action, as a washer bites into the nut and the surface it contacts. Although they are broadly applied, these lock washers can cause scrapes on the coupled surfaces.
