In MIG and flux-core welding, the wire acts as the positive electrode creating the arc and working as the filler metal to provide high-strength joints. Together with the fuel gas, the wire determines the type and outcome of the process. The two welding techniques require the use of specialized wires whose characteristics are standardized. In the U.S., the American Welding Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers are responsible for handling the matter. Typically, MIG wires are identified by the ER (Electric Rod) code and a series of figures and letters indicating the minimum tensile strength, type, and eventual presence of additives.
Flux-core wires follow a similar classification, but the identification code starts with a simple E and reports a suitable welding position. Besides, flux-core types are further classified as self-shielded and gas-shielded wires. The former class ensures shielding through a chemical reaction triggered by the arc.
