You may be a turner working with metal billets before installing them in a lathe, or an electrician cleaning large-diameter wiring from flux prior to soldering it together; regardless of the case, you may need a rasp file. Such tools are utilized for the rough treatment of different materials. In general, they are used by hand and have a round, rectangular, or half-round bar made of durable hardened steel. In particular, round or half-round bars are meant for holes and curved surfaces. Most bars have pointy tangs at the end, which are then covered with either a plastic or wooden handle.

Such tools can be used for cleaning metal profiles and pipes from rust, smoothening sharp edges of steel or wooden constructions, or correcting the shape of some parts. Although rasps are not as efficient as rotary tools, they offer plenty of practicality and durability. They will help you prepare the material’s surface for further treatment with other tools while ensuring the necessary shape. Besides, some rasps are combined models having a chisel at one end or different grades of working surface.
