Files are among the oldest and most basic tools, and they were already used during the Bronze and Iron Ages. Today, the family of rasps and files is large and very articulated, as these tools are used in metalworking, woodworking, and hobbies to shape workpieces, smooth surfaces, or sharpen other tools. Though most of them look very similar to each other, the resemblance is only apparent, as these tools are very specialized and, if properly used, can perform even very refined tasks. Shape and cut are the main characteristics of these tools. For instance, there are rectangular, rounded, triangular, and half-round files, while the cut can be single, double, and curved. Single cut refers to a series of parallel teeth that work great to sharpen and smooth surfaces. The double-cut type is meant for rougher jobs such as general filing or quick removal of material. The curved cut design can be used to sharpen chain saw teeth.
