It is often said that the structure is as strong and reliable as its smallest components and that proves to be true in every field. Weak points in mechanical constructions can cause its breakdown leading to unsafe situations, so paying attention to the tiniest components is a must. Nuts keep the components of the structure fastened together; slotted nuts, for instance, help prevent loosening of a threaded shaft as they allow for the insertion of a cotter pin or wire lacing through a hole in it.
