Despite its simplicity, a utility knife can tackle a host of tasks with enviable ease. Like a number of other great tools, this one is not designed for a particular purpose, but instead it will serve you for a multitude of everyday household tasks, DIY projects, outdoor activities and emergencies. Compact and lightweight, featuring a thin razor sharp blade and a comfortable anti-slip grip, this tool is easy to handle and always comfortable to work with.
Originally, the utility knife featured a fixed blade with a cutting edge that could cope with general and utility jobs, like cutting through wood, plastic, fabric, etc. Contemporary utility knives are more commonly available with folding or retractable blades and are popular multi-purpose cutting tools that can be easily carried around. Depending on the specific application purpose, utility knives are offered in an entire array of sizes, styles, and lengths. A standard blade used for a utility knife has straight cutting edge with a pointed tip. With just a flick of your thumb on a built-in button, the blade will slide or flip out of the tool.
The majority of workplace and construction utility knives feature die-cast metal or molded plastic blades. Some models also make use of razor blades, double-ended utility, curved, or hooked blades. Hooked blades will come in handy for tasks like cutting linoleum, when it is important that the knife do not slide out of the cut. Curved blades are irreplaceable when cutting along the lines that are not straight. Regardless of the type of the blade, it is always easy to adjust how far the blade extends from the knife body. This feature adds to the user's safety and ensures the content is not damaged when removing tape sealing.
The blade is relatively fragile and can get dull rather quickly. Modern utility knives are designed to allow for effortless blade replacement. For some models, spare blades are stored in the cavity inside the tool body that can be opened by removing a single screw. Other utility knives have a quick-change mechanism that does not require using tools or flip-out blade storage tray to replace the blades. Widely used are the so-called snap off blades that are divided into equal segments. When your blade gets dull, you only need to break off the endmost edge of the blade and start using the newly exposed razor sharp segment.
