Regardless of whether you may need to find out the dimensions of your valvetrain’s adjusting shims or parts of other precision mechanisms, you need to have a properly working micrometer. In the outside micrometers, the actual measured object is placed in-between the anvil and spindle. The spindle is brought closer to the anvil by means of a thimble or ratchet knob until the measured object is touched externally. Such a tool is machined to very high precision, and if you use and store it carefully, the thing will serve very long. Modern micrometers feature numerical, digital, or dial indicators, in order to allow the user to acquire the necessary data.
