In the outside micrometers, the actual measured object is placed in-between the anvil and spindle. The spindle is brought closer to the anvil by means of a thimble or ratchet knob until the measured object is touched externally. Such a tool is machined to very high precision, and if you use and store it carefully, the thing will serve very long.
