No doubt that a sledgehammer is a tool specifically designed to hit violently and/or demolish. Mainly, sledgehammers are used for heavy duties in the construction environment such as demolition tasks, fracturing stones, and driving fences posts and stakes into the ground. Curiously, sledgehammers have become a consolidated trend in heavy training. Though sledgehammers are basic tools, they are far from being just a rough piece of heavy metal attached to a long handle. On the contrary, the head's weight and the handle's length are meticulously measured to optimize the momentum and strength of the strike and ensure safety for the operator.
The overall length ranges from about 10 to more than 35 inches, while the head can weigh from 30 or 40 oz to more than 20 lb. Handles are made of wood, fiberglass, or a combination of rubber and steel. Typically, the heads are made of steel or brass. Brass ones are non-sparking and, therefore, much safer near flammable substances. To enhance safety, most models carry a special plate to prevent the head from dislocating.
