A string trimmer is a great power tool used for cutting grass and weeds around trees and in various parts of irregular terrain, which are hardly accessible for traditional lawn mowers. Invented back in the early 1970s in Texas, a string trimmer uses a flexible monofilament instead of steel blades, long shaft with a handle, and small motor. Attached to the cutting head, the string spins at high speed and gets stiff enough to cut grass and even small shrubs. Speed is usually controlled with the help of a trigger positioned on the handle.
Typically, string trimmers are powered by an internal combustion engine or electric motor. The former is located at the shaft end, which is opposite to the cutting head. An electric motor is usually installed near the head, i.e. close to the ground.
